The Department for Transport, (Rail Technical and International Safety) has requested UKAS to develop the accreditation regime for conformity assessment bodies for two commission regulations, under the Railway Safety Directive.
The two regulations are:
- EU 445/2011 – relating to a system of certification of Entities in Charge of Maintenance (ECM) for freight wagons
- EU 401/2013 – relating to the Common Safety Method (CSM) for risk evaluation and assessment.
Currently the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) is the organisation undertaking assessment and certification for ECM, until an accreditation regime is in place and fully operational.
A UKAS development project will be formally announced, commencing in Autumn 2014 and with a timeframe to May 2015.
