What is ESOS?
ESOS requires large organisations within the UK to carry out energy assessments. It is a compulsory energy saving scheme in which the energy assessments must be carried out using either an ESOS Energy Audit, ISO 5001 Certification, Display Energy Certificates or Green Deal Assessments, by the deadline 5th December 2015.
What happens after the 5th December 2015 deadline?
A new compliance occurs every four years. ESOS Phase 2 still includes ESOS audits, ISO 50001, Display Energy Certificates and Green Deal Assessments. The deadline for ESOS Phase 2 is 5th December 2019.
If the organisation chose to use an ESOS Energy Audit for ESOS Phase 1, then they’ll have a robust ESOS evidence pack, including a calculation for their over-all energy consumption, a list classifying all areas of substantial energy consumption and notes of the energy saving opportunities identified.
Though, this information will not be able to be used for ESOS Phase 2 compliance. It will have to be repeated.
The data range must be at least 12 months worth of data and must have been collected within the phase 2 period (between 6/12/15 and 31/12/18)
What are the main steps to take before 5th December 2019?
All large UK organisations will have to take the following steps before the compliance date (please note that there are some exemptions for public bodies):
- Measure their total energy intake,
- Under go audits to recognise cost-effective energy efficiency opportunities,
- Report compliance to their national scheme administrator.
Below are the National Scheme Administrators for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Country | National Scheme Administrator |
England | The Environment Agency |
Scotland | SEPA |
Wales | NRW |
Northern Ireland | NIEA |
